This is a phrase we may hear when confronted with a situation of regret, disappointment or limitation.
If only … I had made this choice rather than that.
If only … I had a little bit more money.
If only … I were smarter.
If only … I had more time.
If only … I hadn’t been running late.
If only … he would have taken my advice.
If only … she would try harder.
If only … we had this.
If only … we did that.
Sometimes people say it as a way of passing blame. Other times it’s a genuine cry for help in the face of difficult or unfair circumstances. If we’re honest, it’s probably a phrase that all of us have said at one time or another.
