Sermon: Practicing Confession (Pastor Joel Shenk)
Communion Sunday, No Sunday School during the month of August
Scriptures: Psalm 32:1-5; 1 John 1:5-9 (Related Texts Isaiah 1:18, Psalm 51, John 3:1-6
Focus: We may not like to think about our sin, and we may avoid the uncomfortable practice of confessing our sin to God and to those we harm. But in many ways confession is where we must begin (or begin again) in our walk with God.
If we avoid or refuse to acknowledge our sin, we remain stuck in destructive habits and unhealthy relationships. But when we examine our lives, and humbly confess our areas of weakness and brokenness, that is when God’s transforming spirit begins to work in our hearts and lives to lead us to new life.
Ultimately, we confess our sin in light of the good news that God in Christ is merciful and loving and has made forgiveness possible.
Action the sermon calls us: To not ignore our sin and failures but to find ways to confess them that are meaningful and authentic. To incorporate confession as a regular practice in our personal devotion and communal worship.
